For the best collection of matka fabrics, check out the collection showcased here. The term matka is related to the rough handloom silk fabrics, which are made using highly thick yarns that have been spun out of the pierced cocoon in the weft along with being organized in the warp. The said yarns are acquired from the shorted ends of silk, which is acquired from mulberry silkworms. This is then spun by hand, but there is no removal of the gum. As a result, the matka fabrics have slubs and imperfections that give it a distinct personality. It appears to be tweed, but the fibers are all the same color.
